The VET Experience
More and more secondary school students are discovering how
Vocational Education and Training (VET) can give them the skills
and knowledge they need to kick start the career they want.
Whether it is through a course at school, or a more formal
School-Based New Apprenticeship, VET has the flexibility and
scope to cater to a wide range of needs.
A ‘rounded’ education
VET in schools is a perfect introduction into the world of
work. Year 10, 11 and 12 students can learn practical skills
and gain an insight into the needs of the workplace.
In essence, their school-based VET studies will make them
a more attractive proposition for employers and give them a
head-start in their chosen career.
What’s more, they can leave school with both a Northern
Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE) and a nationally
recognised vocational qualification. And that means that both
their educational and employment pathways remain viable options.
Meeting all needs
VET in schools can add another dimension to the education
young people receive.
VET means that schools can meet the needs of all their students
- those who will finish school and begin a career; those intending
to undertake further education; and those at risk of not completing
their schooling.
In a nutshell, VET keeps many young people interested in
school. It will expand their post school options and help clarify
the pathways they want to take.
The VET options
VET in schools ensures that students are well placed to go
on to find a job or undertake further study.
There are two options – or pathways – students
can take through VET.
- The VET in Schools Program
The VET in Schools Program is a fantastic way for young people
to get a ‘taste’ of what a particular profession
is like while they are still at school.
It’s just like doing another subject and the students’ VET
studies can contribute towards achieving their NTCE.
They learn about the skills and requirements of the job at
school or through a local registered training provider, and
can complete a number of work placements during the year.
- School Based New Apprenticeships
A part-time School Based New Apprenticeship (SBNA) is a great
way for a young person to make a start in the career of their
choice.
SBNAs can give students the opportunity to gain a nationally
recognised qualification and undertake employment in their
chosen field of interest. And they do this while completing
their senior secondary school certificate.
SBNAs are for truly committed students who know the career
they want and are prepared to work hard at school to achieve
it.
A contract of training is drawn up between the apprentice and
employer. They will spend between one and two days a week in
the workplace with their employer and get paid for the work they
do. When they finish school they can continue their apprenticeship
on a full-time basis.
